What is english gematria

English Gematria is a type of numerical coding system used to assign numerical value to words and phrases based on the letters they contain. It originated in 16th century England, gaining popularity in 19th century Europe. The name gematria derives from the Greek root γράμματα (grammata), which means letters.

In English gematria, each letter of the alphabet is assigned a numerical value ranging from 1 – 9, with certain letters doubling as either more than one number (ex:c/k/q - 3) or as a multiple of itself (ex: w - 6). When applied to a word or phrase, certain words are found to have a unique numerical code. These codes may be used for various reasons, from predicting cycles of events to understanding the deeper spiritual meaning behind messages and events.

This coding system has been used in multiple spiritual and religious traditions over time. In Judaism, it can be seen encoded in some of the names given to characters mentioned in the Torah as well as numbers used during biblical times such as 12 tribes and 40 days of Moses' journey up Mount Sinai. English gematria is seen most prominently in Freemasonry, where Freemasons are believed to use gematria codes during their meetings and rituals. Gematric symbols and beliefs have also been adopted by qlipphothic magick practitioners who believe that numerology can be used to tap into cosmic energies associated with certain words and numbers.
